August 2010 Club Meeting

News and notes from the last TRIbe meeting:

Becky is back coaching Tuesday track! With occasional help from assistant
coach Caitlin Jenny Lavelle. Come say hi to the coaches and get a great
workout at De Anza track tonight.

Coached track workouts and the TRIbe training schedule from Muddy Waters will
run through the end of September.

There are still 3 TRIbe focus races left in 2010: Ironman Canada, Big Kahuna,
and the Santa Cruz Triathlon. It's too late to get into IMC, but you can
still take advantage of the club discounts for BK and the Santa Cruz Tri and
represent TRIbe in the club competition. Check the TRIbe website for race
discount codes. And if you're not racing, consider volunteering at these
local events and help someone else have a great race. Hopefully we can get a
good group of TRIbe volunteers for Big Kahuna.

Dr. Clyde Wilson joined us to share some of his extensive knowledge of how our
bodies use the food we eat and how we can use that information to optimize
health and performance. We all took home a lot of good ideas to improve our
daily nutrition and a Clyde Bar to try! Check out Clyde's website for LOTS
more good info: http://www.drclydewilson.com/

Monique Tobbagi won the Peet's Performance of the Month award for her 2nd
place finish at the Santa Cruz International and speedy 42 minute run split!

Kevin Farley gave Troy Barba the "Race Your Socks Off Award" for his
impressive comeback from a crash this spring. I'm not sure it was a good
display of "TRIbe spirit" to crush us all at track again so soon, but it's
great to see him back in action:) Congratulations Monique and Troy!

Monique and Linda Graham won the race reimbursement raffle and each took home
$50 cash for racing in a TRIbe jersey last month. We also raffled off
canisters of Hammer Whey and Alcis pain relief creams. Everyone got to take
samples of Hammer chocolate whey. And Clyde says we need protein with every
meal! Thanks TRIbe sponsors!

Happy August!

July 2010 Club Meeting

Here's the short version of the July TRIbe Meeting:

There are two big races coming up this Sunday! Good luck to all TRIbe racers
at the Metro Triathlon and Vineman 70.3!

If you're not racing, Andy from Threshold Racing could really use a few
seasoned volunteers at the Metro Tri. All volunteers receive a T-Shirt,
lunch, and a Lulumon sports bag. He's also offering FREE Splash & Dash
entries to the first 10 people to sign up.
Volunteers can register here: www.thresholdracinginc.com/volunteer.php

The remaining TRIbe focus races this season are:
8/29 - Ironman Canada
9/10 - Big Kahuna (1/2 IM)
9/26 - Santa Cruz Triathlon - club championship! (Oly)
The TRIbe training schedule is structured around these events and all focus
races (except IM) are eligible for race reimbursement.

Also, the 3rd and final Splash & Dash event is on Thursday 8/5.

Guest Speakers:
Penni Bengtson from Finish Line Productions came by to introduce the Santa
Cruz Sprint and International Triathlons on 8/7 and 8/8. Austin Foley and
Jason Bryant each won free entries generously donated by Penni!
More info on all her events is here: www.finishlineproduction.com

Then Megumi Masuda from Evolution Trainers spoke to the group about some
common weaknesses and muscle imbalances in triathletes (especially those who
sit at a computer all day!) that can lead to injury. She gave us some great
stretching and strengthening ideas to use year-round. Thanks Megumi and Brian
Beahm for volunteering to strengthen your glutes in front of the club!

Awards:
Allison Perkins won the Peet's Performance of the Month for her great attitude
taking on Ironman CDA with a broken arm. As if Ironman wasn't tough enough!

Jorge Heinemann chose Kevin Farley as the July winner of the Race Your Socks
Off award "for correctly concluding that having cold beers waiting for the
rest of us at the Wildflower finish was indeed more important than actually
finishing the race". Now that is TRIbe spirit!

Congratulations Allison and Kevin!

Free stuff:
Almost everyone at the meeting won Recovery Brik samples, Hammer Gels, Alcis
Pain Relief Cream or free race entries in the raffle. And everyone took home
Strawberry Recoverite from Hammer Nutrition. Thanks TRIbe sponsors!

And thanks Running Revolution for hosting the meeting and providing pizza!

Happy training and racing!

May 2010 Club Meeting

Here are some of the highlights from the May club meeting:

Announcements:
Track coach Becky Lavelle is going on maternity leave in June and July.
Shaluinn Fullove will lead the Tuesday workouts while Becky is out. Shal is
an accomplished track athlete and ran in the 2008 Olympic marathon trials
while working in Product Marketing at Google. She stopped by the track last
night to introduce herself and meet the TRIbe group.

The council is planning a weekend BBQ sometime this month, probably poolside
at Brian Beahm's home in Los Gatos. An separate Evite will go out soon.

Guest Speaker:
Dr. Frank He came to speak to TRIbe about acupuncture and Chinese medicine for
sports injuries. He sparked quite a lively debate about the benefits of
icing! Kelly McDonough and Brian Beahm each won a FREE assessment and
treatment session with Dr. He. Hopefully they'll report back on their
experience.

Congratulations:
Congrats to the TRIbe Team at the Reservoir Triathlon! We're in the running
for the club competition title and cash prize. The competition is a series
with the Metro Tri in July.

And congrats to the large TRIbe group who raced Wildflower long course!
Especially the first timer participants! That course never gets any easier.

Jeff Nollette won the Peet's Performance of Month for his great race at
Wildflower. Jeff wanted to continue his streak of dropping 5 minutes off his
time every year he's raced WF and was shooting for a 5:35. And he finished in
5:35:23! And earned some free coffee from TRIbe!

Dov Sharon gave Don Haderle the "Race Your Socks Off" Award for his effort at
Wildflower. Don told me he had a tough day a Wildflower and "could barely get
a beer down afterward" and Dov recognized this example of TRIbe spirit! Don
gets a new pair of socks for his efforts and will pick the next winner in
June.

Raffle:
Ron Gentile and Eric Perkins each won $50 cash for racing in their TRIbe
jerseys last month!

In addition to the free sessions from Dr. He, we raffled off huge canisters of
Hammer Perpetuem and tubes of Alcis cream.

Thanks Running Revolution for hosting TRIbe and providing pizza and beer for
the meeting!

April 2010 Club Meeting

It was great to see a lot of TRIbe members and some new faces at the club
meeting last night.

Ryan Coelho from USA Productions stopped by to present his 2010 race series,
including some new open-water swims, and donated 2 free TRIbe entries to the
Morgan Hill Sprint! Congratulations to JB Louvet and Matt Babb for winning a
free race opportunity!

Dr Andre Chevalier and Jennifer Young from TEAM Clinic in Santa Clara also
gave a great presentation on the importance of core strength in daily living
and athletic performance. They led the group through some dynamic mobility
tests and it turns out we all have some work to do! Everyone in attendance
received a $75 coupon for a full assessment at TEAM Clinic and Ken Yeager won
a free consultation! Thanks TEAM Clinic!

Upcoming TRIbe events:

month and raffled off 2 big prizes at the meeting last night. New member
Bridgette Clark won $100 gift certificate towards Giro eye wear and Eric
Perkins won a Giro aero helmet. That should save him a lot of time at Ironman
Cd'A! Thanks Karl!
- The Peet's Performance of the Month award went to Tom Werner for his strong

training into a demanding work schedule paid off when he beat his goal time by
over 30 minutes!

Sharon as the April winner for “his steadfast participation in Tribe events

October 2009 Club Meeting

We had our last meeting of the year on Monday. For those of you who couldn't make it, this is what you missed:

·         Race Results - we had some great results out of TRIbe members this past month including some Boston qualifying marathon times, a stellar performance at IM Hawaii, and a 3rd place Team finish for TRIbe at the Santa Cruz Triathlon (we had 20 racers).

·         Race Reimbursement Raffle - this month's winners were Linda Nolette and Steve Bird. They each went home with $50 cash. All they did was race in a TRIbe uniform in the past month and then come to the monthly meeting.  Since we are done with monthly meetings for the year, we will have a drawing in January for anyone who races between now and the end of the year.

·         AWARDS - The Peet's Performance of the Month winner was KYLE WELCH for his outstanding performance at IM Hawaii!  The Race Your Socks Off award (chosen by last month's winner - Nick Goddard) was TRIbe coach BECKY LAVELLE  for her continued support and endorsement of the TRIbe Triathlon Club.  Klye gets a free espresso drink from Peets and Becky got a free pair of socks. Way to go you two!

·         Applied Materials Turkey Trot - Come out and race for TRIbe in the 10K Club Competition on Thanksgiving morning. Don't forget to wear your TRIbe running shirt!

·         Marin County Triathlon - If you aren't quite done racing yet, why not sign up for the Marin County Triathlon? they donate their profits to a number of charities and for the 2nd year - Jenny's Light (Becky's Foundation for her sister) is one of the beneficiaries.

·         End of Season Party - the End of the Season Party will be held on Friday, November 20th.  Mark your calendars!  An Evite will go out to TRIbe members in the next week.

·         USAT Off-Season Challenge - We will once again be participating in the USAT Off-Season Challenge. You will receive an email from Anna with information on how to sign-up. But essentially all you need to do is swim, bike, and run during December, January, and February and report your weekly mileage to Anna. Each month has a different focus and you will be able to see how you compare to other TRIbe members, other triathletes in the bay area, as well as triathletes across the country. It's fun. You should do it!

·         Becky Lavelle  - Becky was our guest speaker this month. She shared her off-season strength training program with us and demonstrated lots of exercises. We will be sending the document with this information to paid TRIbe members. Stay tuned for an email with this information.

·         Schwag/Raffle - we had more Alcis and Hammer Nutrition products that 7 lucky winners went home with. Everyone also got free HammerGels, Alcis sample packets, and a great new article written by Steve Born from Hammer on nutrition for the Half and Full Ironman Distance Training.

Thank you to RUNNING REVOLUTION for opening the store for our meeting and providing us with free beer!  We look forward to continuing our partnership with RR in the new year :)

See you at the party!

July 2009 Club Meeting

It was great to see a lot of old and new faces at the TRIbe meeting on Monday.

We had a LOT of club race results to report including 12 Ironman finishes last month!

We also introduced 2 new monthly recognition programs in July. Rob Rosenberg won the first "Race Your Socks Off" award and got to select a pair of socks from Running Revolution as his prize. The council chose Rob for his great race with the TRIbe team at IM CDA and now he'll select the next winner at the August meeting who explifies team spirit in "Racing, Yelling, Support or Other". Cristina Schwartz won the "Peet's Performance of the Month" award for her 8th place Ironman debut at IM CDA. Congratulations Rob and
Cristina!

The council is still planning an open water swim clinic and summer bbq sometime in the next month. The likely plan is to hold the coached clinic in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Roughwater swim on Saturday 8/1. Details coming soon!

Dave Brown from Fluid spoke about the origin of the company from a reasearch project at Cal Poly and the importance of recovery nutrition while we sipped on samples of Fluid recovery drink.

Greg van den Dries introduced his new product ROCKTAPE an endurance tape for athletes designed to promote circulation. Greg deomonstrated how to tape some common injury sites and gave a free sample of ROCKTAPE to everyone in attendance. He also offered a 50% discount to TRIbe and the coupon code is available to members on the TRIbe website.

Kelly McDonough and Ricardo Gonzalez won the race reimbursement raffle for 2 $50 cash prizes just for racing in a TRIbe jersey last month!

Almost everyone won something from Hammer, Alcis or Fluid in the sponsor product raffle and everyone
took samples from Hammer.

Thanks again to Lauren and Running Revolution for opening up the store for our meeting.

See you in August!
